Inserting Text Files without affecting timeline

Hi guys,

I have two 7 second text files I need to insert into a 10 second gap on my time line, I've tried to squeeze them in but it just mucks up the rest of the project, can you tell me how to insert them without affecting the rest of the project?  Is there a way of making the gap bigger to accommodate?

Update, when I freeze the video tracks around the one I want to add the text files to, I copy the text files but the paste "insert" feature dissapears, must be to do with the locked tracks...

You know the "close gap in sequence," feature, is there not an opposite function?

Install this version.  Ignore any virus warnings.

Lock all tracks except the audio and video for the one you want to change.

To widen a gap, select the first clip to the right of the gap, hold down <shift> and select the last clip in the sequence on that track.

When those clips are dragged to the right they will all move in concert.  If the clips snap back when dragged, hold down the <alt> key while dragging.

To insert new clips, drag them to the track or right-click | PLACE CLIP AT CURSOR POSITION or PLACE ON SEQUENCE.

After the new content is inserted, CLOSE GAP.

Doesn't snap here in version 8.45, when <alt> is held after dragging and before letting up on the mouse button.  In some builds it's not necessary to use <alt>.  Don't attempt to move a single clip.  Select them all - to the end - then drag the group to the right to increase the gap.

Hi

Text files usually have a transparent background. Why not simply place them on a higher track in the required position. The main track will play behind them in the same way as subtitles do.

Hi Nat thanks for replying, no I need the text to have a black background so

Hi

VP 8.84

It would seem a simple matter to ....

  • Position the cursor line to 14 seconds after the start of the 10 second gap.
  • Select and group the clips on Video track 2 and then move them along to the cursor
  • Do the same on Video Track 1 so the gap is now 14 seconds
  • Place the text files one after the other in the 14 second gap now formed in Track 1

BUT for some reason you can select the clips on Track 2 and group them. (They, and their audio grey out which is normal) and then try to move them to the right. Unfortunately clips on Video Track 1 split and also move creating a gap there which to my mind is a bug as they have not been selected or grouped.

It may be a bind but VP 8.45 as Borate suggests may be an answer as in this respect it seems to work although I haven't tried it yet.

Ok I have worked out what the issue is, when i was selecting track one, for some reason, maybe a bug, it did not select all of the audio track, and so when I was moving the track back, I was putting it on top of the unselected audio and that's the reason it was snapping back.

When I moved it a huge amount it worked but then putting it back didn't because the unselected audio was still in its original place, just a massive bloody headache at four in the morning.  I am going to start again and try selecting the track but on the audio line instead of the video, hopefully that way it will select the whole track and nothing else.

Thank you both for your help I will let you know what happens...

One more thing, I now have an unlicensed copy of videopad on my computer, once this is done how do I get back to where I was?

If you are within six-months of purchase, just click the Menu at the top-left and re-register it with your license code.

If you need to revert to your earlier licensed version - or one that was released within the free upgrade period - simply reinstall it.  Installers are normally saved in "C:\Program Files (x86)\NCH Software\VideoPad" or a similar path without the x86.

If you are happy with the VP, there's no mandate to upgrade.  But new features can always be test driven by downloading an unlicensed trial version.

Ok I finally did it, not sure why I didn't think of this before, I couldn't select the whole track for some reason, it always left quite a few tiny fragments behind which were insanely difficult to put back in the sequence, soooo, I copied the whole sequence, pasted it at the end, deleted the original sequence and placed the text files in the space created, still not ideal but it worked for me.

Thank you both for your time, Borate, I used the ID generator on the NCH website and that send me my code, thank you!

Borate,
I already have mentioned the same security issue previously:
