Splitting an amount spent

When I enter the amount spent in the "transaction" window and then go to the "split" window and itemize each individual item I purchased and the price for each item the program adds the individual cost to the "transaction" cost and doubles it, plus it won't allow me to save the entry as the final coat is more than the "transaction" cost. HELP please
