Rebuilding previews each and every time

It seems that every single time I add or alter a subtitle, Videopad feels it is necessary to rebuild the entire preview from the start.

What this means is that the further along I go adding subtitles, the harder it is for me to add subtitles.

I want to check to be sure each subtitle is correct before going to the next, but because it rebuilds previews from the very beginning each time, I have to wait for the preview, which can take minutes, even for a change that looks only a few seconds. Sure, I can TRY and view it, but it does not give an accurate view, skips over scenes, etc. until the preview is reconstructed.

Why can't it simply rebuild from the point of change rather than the beginning?

Built a short video with a dozen subtitles and there was no rebuilding;  each addition or change was almost instantaneous.  No problem when adding text files either.

What version of VP is being used?  What are your PC's specs:  CPU/GPU/RAM/free space on C:\?  How long is the project and how many subtitles are in play?

"What version of VP is being used?"

Videopad Professional 8.42

"What are your PC's specs"

Intel Core i5 3.20 GHz, GPU unknown, 8 Gb RAM, 26 Gb freespace on C:\

"How long is the project"

38 minutes.

"How many subtitles are in play?"

So far 127. Likely 250 in entire project.

If the files/resolution are large that conceivably could bog things down.  The best way to check it out is to share the project.  This could take a little time, but if it's not too big for a free server, please upload it.   Someone will run it and come up with suggestions.

If it contains sensitive material link it in a personal message (PM).  Click the envelope above.  It won't be passed on or retained.  Use FILE|SAVE PORTABLE PROJECT AS, not simply SAVE PROJECT, and don't forget to get a shareable, public link - not one that is restricted.

I think I discovered the problem.

For some reason the original project is getting altered when I add in subtitles. Meaning the size and length of the scenes are being changed. I don't know how, but when I view the project, sans subtitles, it views differently from when I have them put in.

Is that at all possible?

Can't think of how subtitles whould affect video or audio tracks.  Something isn't kosher.  Share the project.

Be sure to SAVE PROJECT AS routinely, giving it a unique # or name so as to not overwrite prior saves.  If SAVE PROJECT (no AS) is used, that will overwrite.

Hi

As a test using VP 8.45 I have just set up a project with 103 video clips with a total duration of 40 minutes. I have added different 100 S/T using the subtitle feature. There were no hangups and the project did not rebuild with each addition.

Subtitles do not interfere with the underlying clips and I cant see how they can change the length of the clip or alter its size.

Are you, in fact using the S/T feature or are you adding text images?

Here's a link to the portable project: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/j6xte7gnl1h2e2o/AABOxeeX5szRbVqrxZ_Is942a?dl=0

Here's also an image of what I'm running into: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rz77m0xsf25b7oz/problem.png?dl=0

Note that the image in the preview area does NOT match the image where the time cursor is. The preview SKIPS that image. Why? I don't know.

In editing existing subs in your projects, or adding new ones, not seeing caching messages.  But there are a few seconds of lag between typing and when the characters appear.  v8.45.

Perhaps that's to be expected when there is a wealth of ST in a lengthy project?

Possibly, but it makes editing impossible at that length.

Is there any way to split up a project so I can shorten the amount of RAM and cache used, then put them back together before rendering a video?

As far as I can see there is no "add project at end/beginning/cursor"

You might begin a project, adding ST, until things start to bog down.  Then export that section.  Of course, at that point, all content is locked in and cannot be changed.

It would be wise to slightly overlap each export, so they can be cleanly pieced together with nothing missing when they are loaded back into VP for the final assembly.
