Using pedal with an odt file

Hello everyone,
I just installed a pedal to use it with Express Scribe (as play/stop button).
Is it possible to use the pedal control while I'm writing on an odt document? Let me explain: I prefer to write directly on an Open Office Writer file document than on the Word Pad integrated to Express Scribe, but if this is open and I am writing on Open Office, obviously the pedal does not work.
Do you have any suggestions?
