Codec for import

I'm about to capture video from analog camcorders. I'm puzzled about which codec to use if I want to edit the video in VideoPad. MP4 H.264 seems to be widely used. However, I've read several places that it's not suitable for editing because it uses "inter-frame compression", while "intra-frame compression" would be better for editing. One example of the latter is Motion JPEG in which each frame is compressed separately.

Which codec (and container format) would you recommend for import into VideoPad, to avoid too much quality loss in the process? As it will also be used for archiving the videos, uncompressed AVI would not be an option, as it takes up too much disk space.
