How can I 'wave sound' files to 'MP3'

Can anyone help me to know how to convert 'wave sound' file to MP3 format.

 

I have a portable MP3 player from my mum in China (I am in Australia) and it has an inbuilt mic which i can record on.

 

When i download these recordings to my computer, Windows Media Player will play them, but I cant open them on any other music programs i have.

 

I would like to put them onto a CD for friends, but it wont recognise the format.

 

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's because media protection, i suppose!

their probably wma copy protected files, in which case media player can play them without any problems and nothing else can play them at all.
