Fade Out Won't Work

I can't turn the music down so as to allow the narration to be heard. I know how to use the fade out feature on my VP, but it wants to allow it to turn down s-l-o-w-l-y; this particular time in my movie, it must turn down rather abruptly. How do I do that? (This is at the beginning, where the "theme song" is turned down to allow the speaking to come through.)
