Importing and manipulating converted AVI in moviemaker

I converted a (.mov) file into an (.avi) file using Prism. I imported the (.avi) into Windows Moviemaker, but when I edit the (.avi) window's moviemaker freezes up. When I can edit it it converts the (.avi) to (.MSWMM). What can I do to stop moviemaker from freezing? Is this (.MSWMM) file able to be saved to you tube? or do I have to convert it back to (.avi)?

 

My goal is to be able to take footage from my (.mov) camcorder, edit it in windows moviemaker (I am a teacher, and need to use this because all of our student computers come with it), then export footage to youtube.
