  1. Thank you borate, Your info helped in that I come to the decision that I will upgrade to i7 + Nvida 3060 which will allow me to work with 4k videos. I also got similar suggestions from other sources. Rumour has it that the latest low wattage consumption design GPU's are on the horizon and that waiting may be advantages. I have learned through the years that waiting for the "new development" before buying, will result in one never buying anything because as soon as it is here, talk of the next new development will already be floating around. Laptop stocks are beginning to run low and what the Chinese embargos will result in, is also very questionable. Any case, I have thoroughly studied the configuration of the specific model and it will do the job. St B
  2. Thanks for the response borate. Interesting build configurations. It takes me back to the days when I custom build desktops for people after consultations with them (not video stuff). However, now I have a video editing configuration “measuring stick”. Thanks for that. I do run the 64-bit version as well (you gave me the link some time ago) The “save as” and working in segments principles are very good. Standard practice by me in all computer jobs, building spreadsheets, type word docs, program coding etc. I do the “clear cache” thing regularly and it does help. (still remember that from some time ago when you suggested it) . Main reason why I look at upgrading (my +/-14 month old laptop), is not because of a low configuration. My laptop ASUS i7 with 1TB SSD is quite fast but the NCH developers still can’t get the Intel iRIS Xe GDU drivers working, which was sort of okay up to some release in the past, can’t remember the number. (I currently run video processing “CPU only”). My “waiting for . ./busy with . . “ problems this week was on a 8 minute clip. I also noticed that multitasking isn’t a good idea, so I have to close all other windows. All that said, the Intel iRIS Xe GDU isn’t exactly fantastic when it comes to video editing according to articles on the internet, so maybe upgrade is in order. Thanks for the information. It will definitely help me to decide on a configuration. St Bosse
  3. Hi guys, I need some technical assistance. If the post is in the wrong section, I apologies and please move it to the right section. I am planning to upgrade my hardware (new laptop) to run VideoPad and other NCH apps. The big question comes regarding the GDU choice. There are lots of discussions and videos reviews on GDU’s but mostly with regards to gamming. Most tests are performance results on selected games which I must admit, is a good way of testing. Video reviews on GDU’s for video editing applications seem to be very scarce. However, I am looking at GDUs for use with video editing (no gamming), the thing we all do with VideoPad etc. Options I have at the moment is: 1) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti, or 2) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. The processor is an Intel i7 and 16GB memory, type DDR4 in both cases. (Price difference on the laptop, 3050 to 3060 is +/- $250) Question is, which one will do the job and or, are these GDU’s an overkill for what I want it for? Also thinking of 4k jobs and so on. On my current i7 laptop, I often get VideoPad messages such as busy with reloading preview or some or other task that causes a delay before I can continue with editing. What part of the GDU specs are the important ones for video editing? Anybody gone through this exercise before? Please let me know your suggestions or recommendations. St Bosse
  4. Hmmm . . .no it doesn't. I tested it with 5 or 6 video tracks and it crashed again. Then set the editing option to CPU only and it worked. Seems the crash/freeze issue is definitely related to the Intel GDUs. St B
  5. Okay, this option works fine! I also noticed that when adding the clips, it doesn't throw it onto the time line as well at the same time. . . . . and I am now totally deconnected and disconfused! The 32bit version works with any "Options - Editing" selection: Default, CPU or GPU. I wonder if the Revo uninstaller didn't clean out some bumf leftovers? Is the above 32bit version different from the VP on the NCH web page? Looks like the Intel GDU iRIS Xe, is at this point not compatible with the 64bit version. Borate, thanks for sticking with me and all your suggestions to get it working. I appreciated it greatly! St Bosse
  6. Hi borate, thanks for joining in the discussion. I have run dxdiag and it show DirectX version 12. GDU (Iris Xe) shows ver: 30.0.101.1660 dd March 17, 2022. I have down loaded the latest from Intel as you suggested and reinstalled DirectX and the GDU driver - NO change. You said "If you provide the project folder . . . etc", then it may help diagnose this issue. Just one problem, when it comes to the "issue" , the system has already frozen and backing up is not possible. . . . or do you want me to do this step after getting it going with the "free tool"? St B
  7. Yes I am using v11.01. This is now an awkward situation ! v11.01 was the last upgrade allowed under my 6 month license . So now you want me the buy/pay for a very questionable upgrade? Are you willing to send me a temporary "key" for the upgrade to v11.38? I have bought quite a few upgrade licenses up till now (and on various other products), as you will be able to verify from your records. Please let me know. St B
  8. How serious is this software issue? Unfortunately, time isn't on my side! Should I start looking at other products? St B
  9. Thank you for your response, only one problem:- "You can chose CPU only from Options > Editing > Video Processor." Video Processor option does not exist on the Editing Tab! Is there another place where this option could be hiding? I am using version 11.01. I have tried both , 32 and 64 bit - No difference! I have also updated to latest version on NCH site hour ago. Same problem!
  10. Please help, I cannot do any video projects! At this point my VP program is unusable. The program freezes on 2nd “Add Files” and when trying to cancel, gives a message “Restarting background thread”, then go into “Not responding” and eventually screen goes pale. If 2nd file does load successfully, there are no thumbnails on the sequence track. Video “play” on the sequence will may also randomly result in a total freeze which requires a “end task” and restart of laptop. If I do get a clip loaded successfully, and try to export, the file may run or run up to a random % and freezes and . . . . Steps after export, close program, discard project, will crash and go pale. Save Project goes straight into “Not responding”. To get out I must “end task” Videopad in task manager and restart my laptop before Videopad will run again. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, update to latest, cleared caches, updated my laptop, win and bios, no difference! . . . and back to version 11.01. My current version which work quite well few months ago! All other programs on my laptop runs perfectly without any problems which I use 6 to 7 hours per day. I do not think it is the video clips because it happens with any clip. St Bosse My laptop: Asus VivoBook Intel i7, GDU Intel iRIS Xe 12GB Mem Windows 10 64-bit 10.0.19044 Firmware X513EA.310 (Downloaded and installed Apr 4,2022)
  11. Thanks borate, Never thought of looking there. Not wanting to labour the point, how does one then get the 64-bit version if preferred? Check for update only says "new update available", (without choice?) St B
  12. . . .mmm . . . How does one know whether it is the 32 or 64-bit version? I cannot find a place where one can see this. Then, when one check for updates on the menu of VP, why would it then say yes to the wrong n-bit version? Shouldn't it stay in-line with the bit version already installed? St B
  13. Why is the latest VP update (v10.63) file size so much smaller than the previous one? (about 30%). I am hesitant to update, reading about some of the complaints. St B
  14. hi Borate, Thanks for the offer. I don't want to waste your time. As you have said, you cannot replicate the situation. I can replicate a specific instance easily by using 29.97 (NTSC) fps. Then again on other clips, 29 will work just fine, but it is unpredictable. So, to be on the safe side, I'll just use 30fps all the time and all is fine. Thank you for your interest. St B
  15. After all my projects were finalized and exported (14 of them), I started stringing the exported files together in a new project to form the final production. Then, did the final export using the (technically / politically? correct(lol)) frame rate of 29.97 (NTSC). Mistake! Frozen frames are back! Was surprised at first when somebody contacted me and pointed out the issue. On closer investigation I tried full 30fps and the frozen frames are gone. I can replicate the issue every time when using the 29.97 (NTSC) fps. So my conclusion is that maybe one should stay away from 29.97 (NTSC) or its double of 59.94fps. Is there any technical reason why one should use 29.97 (NTSC) fps? St B
  16. Hi Nat, Yes we are on the same page here. Sure, the work-around is very clumsy but it seems for now , it could be the only way until something better arrives. VP in totality does have quite a few shortcomings regarding its operation. I for example did a few pen and paper calculations during editing due to a lack of indicators, such as a "selection length" as in WavePad. See also my post on text line feed speed. Any case, thanks for your detailed response. St B
  17. . . . or keep blank inserts with one's text notes on one track and then "Hide track on output"? and group them to ensure they stay attached to the specific issue. St B
  18. While working on my assignment with about 300+ takes (clips) ending up with about 25 projects, all to eventually end up as one project, I was wondering if there is any way of adding "editor's notes" to a timeline. Working on this assignment, going back and forth, I sometimes stop at a timeline position, being revisited for some reason, and then for the life of me, cannot figure out why this weird step is on the timeline, but working perfectly fine. Or working on a timeline, expanding, etc. removing a weird piece, totally illogical, only to discover when I test the project, why that weird thing was doing there. Question: Can one add editor's notes to a timeline? St B
  19. I have seen quite a few discussions (with frustrations) of people that hates the text scroll stuttering. So do I. I have gone on the internet and it is interestingly enough, a frustration all round regardless of which editing software is used. During my search to get solutions to this problem, I can across posts of people that know (I think and hope) that states the following or similar amongst two or three lessor important suggestions:- “The single best thing you can do for your end credits is reduce scroll speed. Our recommended sweet spot is 3 pixels per frame (in 2k or HD) or 6 pixels per frame (in 4k and UHD).” Question: Has anyone ever did this calculation? How does one apply this in VP? How do I apply this statement or translate this to scroll speed (ie. 50 lines per minute or clip length in sec = lines x 2.75 sec/line - [my formula, but still has the odd hiccup])? How to include font size in the formula etc. Anyone ever tried this calculation or got to a formula? Please let me know. Judging from all the posts, I am sure lots of editors would like to hear a about this. St B
  20. Thanks Nat, I'm sort of done, for the "n" th time. Now to experimenting to get the optimum compression and other specs to not loose picture quality when uploading to YouTube and/or Vimeo. I've checked through all the sequences which will be exported to become cuts in the final sequence, and all the cropping and fading is moving to black. (check) Thanks for you and Borate's assistance. St B
  21. Hi Nat, Thanks for the response. I think I now fully understand the fading and cropping transparency characteristics. I used the cropping and fading to get some special effects and also to hide actor dance errors in the footage (all I had to work with). So placing the black blank on track 2, solved the problem and track 3 showed exactly what I wanted without track 1 now starting to shine thru during track 3's cropping or fading moves, confusing the flow. (ie. from a viewers point of view, they may think, oops, the editor forgot something). 🤦‍♂️ St B
  22. Thanks Borate, So I assume the same goes for fading on the upper levels, i.e. fading also goes transparent thus revealing the track underneath at that point in time. If not, what then? Not sure I understand this. St B
  23. Upload on its way. Sorry, I see it's a bit of a stiff size. Track 2 at +/- 0:59.204 had a black blank. I see this is a bit different because it is not cropping involved but fading. As the fading de/increase lower levels' shine thru increases. Track 3 at +/- 1:52.758 has cropping where you will see a shine thru across the top. Thanks St B
