It turns out it works if I drag it BELOW the audio track to where it says "Drag and drop your audio clips here to mix".

Thanks Einstein, yes exactly that. Both methods do exactly the same thing : move the existing video in the sequence and put grey video with the audio when the existing video was.

When I add an audio track to a sequence I want it to be the audio for the video I have. Instead a a totally grey section of video is inserted with the audio. I have a clip in a sequence and I drag the audio to the audio track like I shows in the tutorial here.
