Have you tried horizontally expanding the timeline, using the slider at the bottom-left of the window?

Wrong button - the one under the preview window is strictly for playback. Right-click on the clip itself, either in the bin or on the timeline, and Change Clip Speed. Changing speed on the bin clip won't affect that clip on the timeline - unless the bin clip is added to the timeline after the bin change. Changing speed on an existing timeline clip won't affect that clip in the bin. They're independent.
