If converting reasonably loud files from stereo to mono, (eg stereo wav->mono wav) the result is distorted.. I presume this is because the channels are added together.. For stereo -> mono conversion you should provide the option to select either L+R, L, or R.. and if L+R is selected, the sample should be normalised/scaled down *before* the audio clipping is written into the converted file.
