  1. Well, it worked for a while. Then it stopped working. My suggestion if you need a transcribing program that works, try Gear Player. Express Scribe is just too buggy.
  2. Right. It's limited to express scribe, a spotty program at best. The sheer volume of problems with Express Scribe makes me sometimes wonder if it isn't a bit of scam to sell technical support, but who knows? MY FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM. Anyhow, this is how I made Express Scribe work for one of my scopists and made the hotkeys rewind/fastforward work in Windows 7 properly. 1. Download Express Scribe version 4.30. It's out there. Just Google for it. 2. Right click on the Express Scribe icon. Do not double click and start the program. 3. Go to "properties." 4. Go to "compatibility" tab. 5. Click the box "run this program in compatibility mode" and I chose Windows XP service pack 2 6. The fastforward and rewind hot keys work for my scopist now.
  3. Changing the settings doesn't work. Rewind = Fast Forward if you have Express Scribe and Windows 7. Perhaps this will get fixed, but until then, avoid this latest buggy version of E. Scribe.
  4. Download GearPlayer. It has a trial try before you buy.
  5. Thanks, Jay. I'll give it a try.
  6. Yeah, get Gear Player. It can play dss files.
  7. How do you get the dss32.dll file that is 184 or 186? Where exactly do you put it in ES?
  8. They can't fix it. That is why there is no helpful response to your question. Tech support lied through their teeth for months and months about the Olympus recorder problem and Express Scribe. However, they have no problem taking your money for their faulty products or non-existent tech support. My suggestion is that you return your product to them and get your money back. Get Gear Player and you won't have problems anymore. Not only does Gear Player work with Olympus files and any other format, they have great tech support. Work is too stressful to put up with faulty software.
  9. Marcia, I read this forum infrequently so I just saw this message. All I know is recorded files made with the popular Olympus recorders do not play in Express Scribe if they are long files. Claims by tech support of trying an older or newer version of the software to get these Olympus files to work are, quite simply, lies. They are unable to fix the problem. The problem has existed to my knowledge for almost a year now. I would recommend using the transcription software Gear Player as it works with no problems. Yes, it will cost you money. I have spent hours and hours trying to get Express Scribe to work, read the misleading posts by tech support who engaged in a cover-up of this problem and tried all their solutions, none of which worked.
  10. I was a happy Express Scribe user for years and I enjoyed it. My guess is NCH outsourced their programming "overseas" to a bunch of cheap but incompetent programmers. Too bad really. Some of the versions of Express Scribe that have been slopped out the door have been so buggy you can tell it was never tested once by anyone who knew what they were doing.
  11. I personally believe the programmers cannot fix it. Since the problem has been so longstanding my opinion is it will not be fixed. Not ever.
  12. I still run experiments on it since I report back to hundreds of court reporters who might potentially use this product. For the better part of a year Express Scribe cannot play digital files recorded on Olympus Recorders unless they are short. No matter what tech support says, and they have lied through their teeth repeatedly, it does not work. Despite claims of it's fixed, we are feverishly working on fixing it, more than half a year has passed and Express Scribe still fails. There are no work-arounds that I know of. Do not buy Switch. Converting Olympus files to wav still won't work on Express Scribe. And besides, Windows Media Player can convert your files for free anyway. If you have a dss file and you want a reliable player I like Gear Player. Perhaps there are other players out there that work but I know Gear Player works with Olympus. When Express Scribe is fixed, I'll be happy to recommend it again.
  13. It doesn't matter whether you're running the last version of ES or not. ES does not work with dss files. I've had my Olympus recorder for almost a year now and ES has not worked with it. The recorder records in WMA format. It is not recent at all. It is a falsehood for you to say so. NCH has been unable or unwilling to fix the problem.
  14. My recorder is an Olympus DS50. Version 4.17 of Express Scribe will play my dss files. HOWEVER, they can only be of a certain duration. If the sound file is short, say an hour, it loads just fine. If you load a file that is five hours long, it cuts off the last 20 or 30 minutes of the sound file. I have replicated this time and time again for my scopist. I have played the same files in Windows Media Player and the files play all the way through to the end. I have loaded the files in Gear Player (another dss player) and the files play just fine. The problem is with Express Scribe unfortunately.
  15. I use an Olympus recorder and it records in the WMA format. I could not get long WMA files to work in Express Scribe. They would just cut off, or the whole file wouldn't load. These files were three hours, four hours, and in one case over seven hours long. Converting the files to mp3 did not work either. The next few depositions I recorded I started something new: I would start a new recording about every 90 minutes instead of making a long seven to eight hour recording. At the end of the day I had recorded a seven to eight hour deposition, but the files were broken up into segments of 90 minutes each so I had five separate recordings. My scopist reports to me that this worked in Express Scribe as WMA files. The files fully loaded and played all the way through without a hitch.
