File Size Limit

In the online FAQ, NCH makes the comment:

WavePad has a limit of the duration of the files you can view in one screen. To open these files download Slice Audio File Splitter from www.nch.com.au/splitter and split the file first. Then open the parts of the file into WavePad.

Unfortunately, the "limit of the duration of the files you can view in one screen" is not defined. Whether one uses Slice or some other application to split the "too large" file, you still have to know what that limit is in order to make your splits the right size.

What is the mp3 file size limit that can be opened in WavePad?

Thanks

Theoretically, this is not a really difficult question ... I'll provide a little more information in hopes it might help shake loose some response:

I am using a digital minutes recording program (For The Record) to record committee meetings which last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours. After the meeting minutes are transcribed, the audio files are posted on our website for access by the public.

During the course of an meeting, a break may be called that may last from 5 to 30 mins, but the recorder is left on. We would like to eliminate this gap of inactivity from the audio file before uploading it to the web. (If we turned off the recorder during the break, we would end up with two audio files, and would still need something like WavePad to "knit" them into a single file for public downloading.)

It may be that WavePad was developed by people who only contemplated it would be used to work with single songs of less than, e.g. 30 mins. in length; I'm just trying to find out what the upper limit is for the length of a single audio file that WavePad can work with, so I can tell whether I need some other software to accomplish what we need.

Unfortunately, the WavePad online technical support page fails to provide this information during their brief discussion of the limits of duration for files in WavePad.

So ... does anyone know what that upper limit for audio file length is?

Thanks,

gloomer

I think the largest file I've ever recorded was 2+ hours... and it didn't even blink at editing that, so no problem. One might suppose you're limited by memory, but even then cache-ing files are de rigueur these days. I suppose one could test it by just setting your music collection to play (or internet radio) - and record that (rather meaninglessly) for 6 hours or so and see what happens. Generally recordings default to decent .wav quality so you're likely to end up with a bloody large file. I could do this for you, but as I have 4GB ram/overclocked quad core/x64-bit vista my results would probably not be too indicative of "normal experience". :P

Hey, thanks for responding ... recording isn't the issue, though ... the recording is being done in another application, which then produces a .wma audio file which I further convert to mp3. But the average recording is still of a 2-6 hour meeting.

What WavePad won't do is OPEN that existing 2-6 hour file. It returns an error msg about a size limit -- a message that is confirmed via the NCH online help pages. But no indication what size file WavePad WILL open ... what's the size or length limit on those, that is my question.

And you are right ... no computers in use in my county government come anywhere near the specs of your machine :o Thanks for the kind thought, tho....

Hello,

That is weird, you should be able to load any file without issues as long as it is not a very long audio file (Hours), there is no way to reset WavePad other than uninstalling it and reinstalling the program.

You can try reaching out to NCh Technical Support to see if they have more tips they can provide you with.

Good luck!
