MP3 FORMAT SOUND file types

I had a few songs backed up to a dvd using the roxio software; i'm not sure what they did but when i attempted to place the songs onto my computer again they were all transferred but i'm unable to play them. The error message I get is:"The file you are attempting to play has an extension which does not match the file format". The extension as displayed in Windows Explorer is "MP3 Format Sound" - is this a valid file type? Is there anyway to convert it back to mp3? Is it possible to save any of the files because as of now nothing plays - it's roughly 9.5 gigs.

it might say that when the file extension of the file does not match the internals of the file. Download GSpot and let it determine what the file format is.
