Guest Chris
HI I am in the UK with an ordinary BT provided line and ADSL. My PC runs Win XP Pro with SP2, AMD Athlon 64 and 1GB RAM. I am seriously interested in using IVM. It seems to offer everything i need and i now wish to choose a correct modem. I bought a Hayes Accura V.92 PCI UK/IRE modem and have discovered that it doesn't support Voice, even though the paperwork refers to voice, by installing it and checking the command response for AT#CLS - it doesn't support it. IVM requires the following to be sure that it will work: "You must check that your modem is actually a VOICE modem. Refer to the modem documentation and specifications to see if it says VOICE modem. If you are still in doubt you can look at the modem diagnostics query result (from the Control Panel -> Modems -> Diagnostics). If the query response for AT#CLS fails then it is not a voice modem. Modems which are not voice modems cannot work with IVM. It is essential that your voice modem has 100% TAPI compliant drivers (including wave drivers). It is not enough that the software provided by your modem manufacturer (or other software) works, because it might connect directly to the modem and bypass the driver files." I would prefer to use an internal PCI modem if one is available. Other than that i have no preferences and would be grateful for some advice - maybe from someone else running this package in the UK (but don't let that restriction hold you back ). Thanks in advance Chris PS - It would be helpful if posters could state their country when posting because different services on telephone netwroks around the world have different standards. For example, BT in the UK have their own standard for CLID.

The information above re AT Commands to test for voice capability is to specific and some voice modems (such as mine) will give an error for AT#CLS even thouigh voice is supported - it depends on the chipset used as to what you type in the detect voice capability. If you want a more reliable method just look for speaker and mic jacks on the modem - generally speakerphone capable modems have these. A good source of Caller ID info (with emphasis on the BT system) is here: http://www.ainslie.org.uk/callerid/cli_faq.htm Good luck.

Thanks in advance Chris Chris, I too am in the UK and I've been unable to test IVM before today because my modem didn't work. The good news tho is that I picked one up on Ebay for £6 which works fine. It's a Mercury 56kbps pci data/fax modem (model no: HP156A). I got it from a user named Whichcomp for £5.95 + £2 p&p (actually I bought 3 of them and he only charge me £3 total for p&p). I paid monday, he emailed me straight after to say he would post tues morning and they arrived today. I was concerned that it didn't say voice modem on the box and the AT#CLS? command is not supported according to the control panel applet. The modem also shows up as an Intel 537EP. I figured I'd give it a go and stuck the IVM demo on and called my number from another line in the office. 2 rings and it went straight to the answerphone and recorded a test message no problem. Needless to say I am impressed and will no doubt spend the rest of today finding out what else IVM can do. cp
