Triplet Bar/Stems

I am trying to work on Moonlight Sonata which uses lots of triplets.  In the 5th bar, half way through, I need to enter the eighth notes with stems pointing down and  group the notes into a triplet with the stems pointing down and the triplet bar and number below the bar so that I can add a 2nd voice above that is not hidden by the stems and triplet bar.  When I add the first note and select stem down everything looks ok.  Then, when I add the second note, the stems of both notes are flipped up.  I found the way to place the number of the tuple on the bottom but the bar doesn't move.   Any Ideas?
