Newbie Help on Normalization of Music Volume

I'm very new at sound programs and some of the terminology, so bear with me. I have quite a large number of music files that I want to have the same volume level. I am on a Mac running OS 10.12.6 Sierra. I used another program to attempt this and now with the volume all the way up in iTunes the files are too quiet. The default setting in that program was 89db and to prevent clipping, I changed it to 88db. It looks like I might need to Amplify the files before Normalizing the volume. I don't know how many db I need to set for amplification.

On the Normalize screen there are presets:

Simple Peak Normalize

Simple Peak, 3db Headroom

Simple Peak, 6db Headroom

Simple Peak, 9db Headroom

Simple Peak, 12db Headroom

Equal Average Loudness

Equal Average, Extra Headroom

Equal Perceived Loudness

Equal Perceived, Extra Headroom

I tried looking this information up in the help files, but did not see anything, to know which one to select and why. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

jodmcc
