Time stamping not working

Hi, I've carefully followed the instruction for time stamping as I transcribe, yet nothing happens. No time stamp shows up in the file when I transcribe or in the exported file. As per the instructions, I go to "insert" and and choose "time" or I hit command, shift, T . And bizarrely when I hit command, shift, T, it highlights all the text in the typing field and then deletes it when I make another entry. When I got to "insert" "time" nothing at all happens. What am I doing wrong? Is the time code supposed to show up in the text as I'm typing or only later when the file is exported? Might I be exporting the file incorrectly? ANY help would be greatly appreciated!
