how does it all work

i trying to use the express accounting i can see when i get it sussed but i dont understand how it all works, i add my invertory that lets say is 100 pound but it does not come up as a value in the total value??? now forgive me for being dub but i new to all this and would of thought it would of come up as a comp-any asset value??? i need some serious help understanding how it all works, i know when i ubderstand it all it will be a brill bit of kit to my business, thanks for ANY help in advance
