  1. I agree. I have a large collection of different microphones and none of them works properly when just plugged into the Mic In jack of the computer. My solution is to use a small mixer board. Plug the mic into the mixer, and the output of the mixer into the LINE IN inputs of the computer. Works great - good volume, no hiss, perfect fidelity.
  2. The computer's input volume control is probably set too high. Click the Volume Control in the System Tray, or find it at Start / Programs / Accessories / Entertainment / Volume Control. Click on Options, then Properties, then select Recording and OK. Lower the slider for your Line In.
  3. If Golden Records shows a signal but you're not hearing it, check the Volume Control on your computer (in Windows XP it should be in your system tray, or you can find it at Start / Programs / Accessories / Entertainment / Volume Control). Make sure the control for your Line In is not muted, and the volume slider is not at the bottom.
