I am having similar problems with Express Rip accessing FreeDB as well. I have several CD's the software ripped fine, but it would not get CD info from neither Freedb or Musicbrainz. Yet, with Media Monkey, time after time, had no problem getting info from Freedb for the same exact CD. The CD's that failed are all CD+R copies (I have no -R) and with 3 completely different makes and model newer cd/dvd drives. I received the following message. "The operation failed when trying to access the Freedb internet server. Check if you are connected to the internet. You can also try using the alternate server....". I wonder if Express Rip is not waiting long enough, or not retrying after soft read errors from the CD before quitting and then never actually attempting to access the data base. I would however expect a different error message.
