Track 1 audio not playing after I added Track 2

I am trying to set up a fireplace video with fireplace sounds muted in the background with Christmas music over it. But not so muted it isn't there...

I tried searching here and looked at the tutorial but it was no help. Unfortunately the documentation leaves a lot to be desired. I've used Wavepad for many, many years and Videopad for simple school projects with my youngest before and never had an issue.

I must be missing something simple. The main panel is not muted for Track 1 (fireplace sounds), none of the individual audio files (8 of them) are muted or at anything but 100%, neither audio track is set for solo, yet only the audio Track 2 (Christmas music) plays (and the sound meter lights up).

The noticeable difference is that Track 1 has the FX, speaker and Unlink symbols on each audio file while Track 2, which plays, does not. This is all in Timeline mode. In Storyboard mode Track 1 doesn't appear at all.

One factor that might be important is that the fireplace sound was linked to the video when I imported it into the editor. I played it and first heard the sounds (I hadn't expected them). I was able to mute the sounds successfully in Timeline, then added the Track 2 with the Christmas music and lost Track 1.

What does that tell you experienced folks (if anything)?

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Other people might be able to understand better, but would it be possible for you to show a screenshot of what the sequence timeline look like?

To post a screenshot here, you'd need to upload it somewhere else, then in the "reply to this topic" editor press the "Image" button (2nd row, 11th from the left) and put a link to the image there.

Simulating your description in VP 4.46...

Loaded a linked A/V clip - track 1

Double-clicked the audio track, to bring it up in preview, then dragged the blue line downward by about 20% - to lower the volume.

Loaded a music file onto audio track 2, without decreasing its gain. Track 2 played at full volume with track 1 in the background.

Try that scenario, and don't mute track one prior to loading track 2. The result should look like this...
