slicing sample files

As a new user of WavePad master edition for Mac, I am curious as to why I can slice up a 2 channel - 24bit - 96kHz large file into small files by saving the small files in AIFF where the same total bit rate is maintained but cannot save them as WAV files with the same total bit rate?? Saving the new files as WAV files in WavePad forces me to choose 16bit which reduces the total bit rate or 32bit which needlessly increases the total bit rate compared to the original file.

In principal, I am a fan of not changing total bit rate OR even audio formats when making a copy that needs to maintain its excellence... I can usually hear the difference when changing total bit rate in a dubbing but need an expert to tell me if good audio engineers can hear quality changes when copying from WAV to AIFF formats.
