  1. Dear friends, I am trying to record video with a higher audio bitrate, ideally 192KHz. However, despite the appropriate settings in the recording window and mixer, the recorded file is always at 44.1kHz. Initially I thought that it might be due to H264/5 or MPEG4 format limitations, but the same happens when I use VP to record a plain audio file: All settings are for 192KHz but I only get 44.1KHz Is there any way to record at a higher sampling than 44.1? Best regards, Takis
  2. Forking this audio discussion out of the topic 100 clip multi screen method... Manifesting as a kind of burbling or flutter in the hiss of ambient noise captured from wind in trees (I presume), the distortion was introduced in the export from VP. I have now checked more closely using just the one video clip (a long shot of a flag waving in the breeze). The VP Preview sounds the same as the original MP4 file - the hiss or wind noise is smooth across the spectrum. Exported to MP4 and it is degraded by the H264 and H265 video codecs, whether the audio bit rate is 128 or 192kbps. In MP4, VP gives no choice of audio codec - only AAC-LC is available. Surprisingly, choosing the MPEG-4 video codec results in audio quality that is indistinguishable (or nearly so) from that of the source clip. H264 AVC is supposed to be better than MPEG-4 (I know the H264 standard encompasses MPEG-4 but those are the labels VP puts on its choices) for video but it should have no effect on the audio stream when its encoder is the same. Using the Default Quality/Filesize setting in VP, here are some parameters for the resulting files: Video Compressor Filesize AudioBitRate VideoFormat H264 5.87MiB 192kb/s AVC H265 1.52MiB 192kb/s HEVC MPEG-4 4.48MiB 166kb/s MPEG-4 Visual All above set at Default Quality/FileSize, 30fps, 192kb/s It's puzzling that VP produces a larger file from the "H264" "Compressor" than from the "MPEG-4" when the former is supposed to be able to produce a much smaller file for the same picture quality or a higher video quality for a given file size. It's as though VP wants the H264 "default quality" to be much better than MPEG-4's yet I could see no discernible difference in the waving flag. And despite the MPEG-4 actual bitrate for audio being lower (according to MediaInfo), it sounds much better on the wind noise than H264. I even tried "High Quality" H264 (twice the file size) but that, too, suffers the same audio impairment. So I think there is something seriously wrong with VP's implementation of the H264 and H265 codecs and the only viable choice for MP4 format is the MPEG-4 "Compressor". P.S. The H264 and MPEG-4 exports for Default Quality/FileSize can be auditioned here
  3. Hi, I recently upgraded my computer to an iMac which runs OS Sierra. It is a late 2015 model I believe. I uploaded Express Scribe Pro and have been using it but since having it on this computer the sound quality is absolutely appalling. I'm having to listen to transcripts 4 or 5 times before sending them off, which has resulted in a decline in the amount of work I can take on and also, the work I do take on takes me through the night to finish. Which is, obviously less than ideal. The audio emits a whine throughout on Express Scribe, which gives me a headache, yet when I upload the same pieces of audio to other programs, such as Wavepad, the audio is crystal clear! I have tried using the special audio effects options and, if anything, they just seem to make it worse. It is driving me absolutely mad and I'm so cross that I wasted money and so much time and energy on a program that I, currently, cannot utilise! Can anyone help?!!! NB. I use an Infinity foot pedal and Sennheiser headphones with Express Scribe, just in case that info makes a difference!
  4. Hello, everyone I've been using ES for years and I have a brand new problem since I bought a new iMac 27" Retina 5K running Yosemite 10.10.2. I am a court reporter and I record interviews and depositions in the MP3 format using a two-channel Marantz PMD670 digital recorder. Channel 1 is the live audio track of the participants and Channel 2 contains my voice recorded using a Stenomask microphone on the other channel of the Marantz. When typing transcripts, I transcribe using Channel 1 but often switch to Channel 2 to check anything that's not clear on Channel 1. In my many years of doing this, I've never had any problem with the recordings. Both channels have always been extremely clear and with good volume and ES has played them perfectly. On the new iMac, for which I purchased new licence for Express Scribe, I am using Express Scribe 5.70. Channel 1 is still clear and loud but Channel 2 is almost completely muted. I checked all the input settings on Express Scribe and made sure they were exactly the same as the ones I had used previously on my old iMac. When that didn't improve things, then I readjusted the sound output settings in the iMac System Preferences. The output volume is set at maximum and the balance is set right in the middle. I tried increasing it to the right and increasing the volume for Channel 2 in Express Scribe. When I did that, Channel 2 was a little louder but it's extremely distorted and largely unintelligible. It's completely different than what I used to have. I can't understand why one channel is perfect and the other is useless. I had an older iMac (late 2009, 27") and had recently updated the OS to OS X Yosemite (10.10.2) and was using Express Scribe 5.50, and even after I installed Yosemite, it still worked perfectly. So I conclude that the problem is related to the new iMac Retina 5K, not to the Yosemite OS since both machines have the exact same OS. I've checked every setting that I can think of but nothing has improved the Channel 2 playback. This new iMac has been available for several months, and since NCH has obviously devoted a lot of work to making good software for Macs, I did not expect to have any problems with the new computer. I would have expected that NCH would have made sure that all its apps play well with the new models. I did find a few references to problems with Mavericks on other Mac threads but so far I haven't found anything similar to my problem. This is really frustrating because this is my job, and so far I haven't found any app that could replace ES. I hope an admin is reading this and can help me find a solution. Thank you Patita (Canada)
  5. We dictate with some Android app and create WAV files that we send to our secretary by Email. The sound quality is good, means, the dictation is clear. Depending on where the dictation was recorded, there is some background noise, but nothing drastic. However, having imported the WAV file, the quality reduces drastically. There are audio artifacts and background noise that is so much amplified, that the dictation can hardly be understood. Any idea what can be done? Guess that is a compression or CODEC issue but where can I change which setting, so that this reduction of quality can be avoided? Klaus
  6. Hi there, I'm running Express Scribe 5.70 on a Macbook with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 I bought the pro version of ES so that I could upload .mov files. But when I play back .mov files only ONE channel of the audio is reproduced. The other is completely silent. The multi channel display show both channels ticked and their volumes up full. It makes no difference if I opt for 'Default Playback Service' OR 'Built In Output' as the Sound Device in Preference, or if I change the setting for Volume auto-adjust. I need both channels because this is a Skype recording and the voice of my interviewee is on the channel that is not playing back. I know this is not the fault of the file itself, because when I play it using QuickTime Player 10.3 BOTH channels are crystal clear. So far I've paid 34 AUS$ to buy the Pro version of ES. I'm loathe to spend another $33 on 3 email consultancy sessions. As far as I'm concerned, I've been sold a product that doesn't work and by all the basic rules of intended use etc, this is totally unacceptable. Please can someone from NCH contact me to either help me solve this problem or arrange for a refund. Many thanks, Andy.
